Wondering About Wolves-A Mini Research Lesson

Time Frame:
2-3 30 minute sessions early in the year
The teacher asks students all of the things they think they know about wolves and post sticky notes on chart paper based on Debbie Miller's model. The story Wolves by Emily Gravett is read aloud to students. Students work with a partner to create a list of all of the questions they had about wolves after reading the story. Students are asked to brainstorm of all of the places they might go to find the answers to their questions. Examples of the places the first graders thought of were: nonfiction books, computers, magazines, asking a scientist, and watching a wolf in the wild. Students then use PebbleGo to research information about wolves. After researching, the class shares what they have learned and discuss misconceptions they had.
Day 1
  • Students share prior knowledge of wolves
  • Students listen to Wolves by Emily Gravett
  • After reading the story, students turn and talk with a neighbor about any questions they have about wolves
  • Students share questions with whole group and teacher scribes on sticky notes to be added to chart paper
  • Students brainstorm places to find answers to their questions
