2nd Grade Pre-Ignite: Help Me, Mr. Mutt!

Media (Literature / Writing)
Time Frame:
4 45-minute sessions -- at end of year after checkouts have been completed.
Using Help Me, Mr. Mutt as a mentor text, students will use Moodle to reply to a new, teacher-created letter to Mr. Mutt. This lesson assumes that students have had practice with a few sample Moodle Forums. If not, SLMS may need to demonstrate how to log onto Moodle and post a response to a Forum.
1. Day One: SLMS reads text aloud. Students & SLMS discuss the features of the text (e.g., use of graphical representations such as bar graphs, charts, diagrams, data visualizations; distinctive voice of Mr. Mutt and The Queen; distinctive layout of pages for each speaker.

2. Day Two: SLMS leads review of elements and notates them on white board or by taking dictation on a laptop connected to a data projector. This gives students a visual reference as they compose. Students divide into teams and use media center computers to compose a response to the teacher-provided letter to Mr. Mutt, in the voice of Mr. Mutt:

June 4, 2009
Dear Mr. Mutt:
Help me! Every night after dinner, my people want to take me for a walk. I like walking, but I hate being on a leash. Why do I have to wear a leash?

From Leashed in Louisiana
P.S. That rotten cat never has to wear a leash.

They will use PowerPoint or KidPix (their choice) to create a data visualization and export that graphic so that it can be imported into the Forum response. Students may need a mini-lesson on exporting images and importing into Moodle. (Note: Moodle Forums require that you type at least one character or space before you can upload an image into the response.)

3. Day Three: SLMS introduces next step: to find a response from Mr. Mutt and create a response from The Queen, this time using only KidPix or PowerPoint (no Moodle text) to compose and export a note on the Queen's "stationery."

4. Day Four: Students randomly draw the name of a team response to which they can reply and compose a constructive reply. They will then reply to a teacher-created journal entry and reflect on their process (e.g., teamwork, brainstorming, work habits, time management) and their product (the content and style of the posts).
